What is Lymphedema?
Lymphedema is a chronic disease that results in a buildup of lymph fluid (swelling) in the body when the lymphatic system is either faulty or damaged. There are many causes, but the most common is cancer treatments that remove or damage lymph nodes or lymph vessels. Other well known causes are chronic venous insufficiency, congenital malformation, injury, trauma, infection, obesity, and pregnancy.
The Never Alone Cancer Foundation is a wonderful organization that provides emotional, social, financial and informational support to patients, families and caregivers affected by cancer.
